feelin fine chart

Notice on the Men’s Height Weight Chart – that the average weight for men is changing with age.

The first thing that you notice on the men’s height and weight chart, besides the colors, are the curves, showing that men are gradually gaining weight until their early 50’s. After that, the average weight for men gradually declines. This is nature – natural and healthy.

The average weight for men is around 180 pounds.

Did the Doc just say getting heavier is healthy?

Hector Hector
Um, something about nature.

Dr. Halls Dr. Halls
I had to wait a decade for science to catch up, to what I’ve believed all along. Now research has proved that men and women who gained weight into the BMI of 25 to 30 range when they reach age 50, are healthiest with the longest lives.

The chart above is for “White“
race/ethnicity. Male Weight charts of other race/ethnic groups are: White, Black, Hispanic, or Other. * The “Race-Ethnicity” categories.

Billy Billy
Are other races different?

Dr. Halls Dr. Halls
Some minor body composition differences i.e. body fat percentage and muscle mass, but the weight curves shapes are similar all around the world.

Also see the Height Chart for Men of “White” race/ethnicity. Your Ideal Body Weight, and your Body Mass Index BMI calculator for men here. There is even a page with a Men’s body mass index bmi chart.

Better explain the red lines on the chart.

Billy Billy
I’m not listening. I hate charts.

What does the Average Weight Chart for men Mean?

The red lines in the chart above show “percentiles”.  The thick red line in the middle is the 50th percentile, which indicates that 50% of the population of men have a weight heavier than the line, and 50% are lighter.

Similarly, the highest red line, the 95th percentile line, indicates the weight where 95% of the male population is lighter.

Hate is a strong word, that I only use for things I dislike.

David David
The thick red line on the chart, is Average.

Any charts for women?

Other Height and Weight Charts

Charts for average weight for women and average height for women are also available. See the chart index for a whole set.

Charts for average height for boys and average weight for boys are available here.  These are also interesting, because they not only show the average height of children, they also show that the tendency to develop obesity in adult life often begins in childhood.

The data source for this chart is the NHANES III survey, conducted in America during 1988 to 1994

What is the national average weight for men in America?

The average American adult male weight is somewhere between 76 to 84 kilograms, depending on age. ( for white males*).

Dr. Halls Dr. Halls
Average weight, according to your age, is in the table below.

Why does the CDC website say that men’s average weight is higher? They say 195.5 pounds.

Dr. Halls Dr. Halls
Politics.

The Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) can make the average weight become a higher number by being tricky.

They can include all the super-obese people into the arithmetic. There are people out there who weigh 700 pounds or more, and they can skew the average.

My tables do the better thing, by using the MEDIAN result, and telling you it’s AVERAGE.

The Politics of Obesity

The reason that I think there is politics, is because the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) wants people to worry about an overweight and obesity epidemic.

They want to show high levels of fatness, and a low standard to compare to, so that the majority of the population is called overweight. The academics in overweight science, want funding for bigger and bigger research studies.

By the way, this isn’t unique to obesity. Any disease that gets a lot of mainstream TV coverage, and millions raised by organized fundraising, has the same incentives to turn their disease into an epidemic.

To prove my point, I’m sure you’ve heard of the statistic that over 50% of the population is overweight. But you probably haven’t heard that being so-called overweight in your 50’s is the healthiest. Here’s the articles that proves it:-

After reading that and checking out my bmi I’ve decided to join weight watchers.

Yeah, I like to watch people lose weight too.

What about weight loss and dieting?

I would encourage you to use my body mass index bmi calculator or Ideal Weight calculator to find out if you are at a healthy weight for your height and gender.

personal weight chart

On the topic of dieting, it is WELL KNOWN that diets only work temporarily. Here is a chart of my own diet from 1999 to 2002.

You can see there is rapid weight loss, followed by gradual weight gain. Then the same pattern repeated when I did another successful diet in 2012, and regained in 2014.

My point. There are times in your life when you MUST diet. It happens for health reasons or wanting love and romance.

During those times, go for it, enjoy the feeling of success and achievement and empowerment. And when you gain weight later, or see others regain later, accept that too, as part of being human.

Tanya Tanya
But don’t you think some people are too fat?

Brittany Brittany
Obesity is ugly.

Dr. Halls Dr. Halls
Definitely. In my job as a radiologist, I see people die every day because their obesity has led to type diabetes, heart attacks, heart failure, high blood pressure and a long list like that. I just don’t believe in exaggerating problems or oversimplifying.

Let’s do some Q&A… Fun!

What is the average weight for a guy who is 6’2″?

It all depends on your body type or body frame size. For example if you are a small frame, the average weight would be between 155 lbs and 168 lbs, if you are a medium frame, the average weight would be somewhere between 165 and 178 lbs, and if you are a large frame, the average weight would be between 172 and 197 lbs.

What is the average weight for boys ages 16+?

From age 16 and beyond, boys continue to grow a lot more rapidly than girls do. A 16 year old boy is on average 68 inches tall (5’6″) and weighs 134 pounds. From 18 +, boys are on average between 69 and 70 inches tall (5’7″ and 5’8″) and weigh somewhere between 148 and 160 pounds.

What is the average weight for men according to physique?

There are a few physique competitors that weigh around 200 pounds on stage. As a matter of fact, if you actually knew how much the typical physique competitors and body builders weigh on stage, you would be really surprised to know how light most of them actually tend to be.

Indeed, body builders look bigger because they have a lean body and high muscle mass, but their body weight is actually pretty low, believe it or not.

What is the average weight for men in Canada?

The average weight of Canadian men is around 183 pounds. Furthermore, the height of men in Canada is 5’10”.

How else can you assess if you are within a healthy weight range?

A healthy body weight is not really based just on your height, weight, age, ethnicity and gender, it is also related to the amount of body fat you have compared to muscle.

Furthermore, having a large waist circumference, or a lot of abdominal fat, can have increased risk factors for some health conditions.

If you want to lose weight it is important to work on fat loss, rather than fat and muscle loss, especially as you get older.  In addition, if you are really keen you can see the formula to work out your body fat percentage HERE.
