Equipment in the basement for my fish tank

February 28, 2015 By Dr. Halls

Aquarium supporting Equipment, in my basement. (furnace room).

Sink

Sump

Salt Mix tank

Shelf

Water-making and storage

Reverse Osmosis (RO)
water purifier,

and Deionization
resin filter.

Electric controlled valves
on input water supply
to RO

Selenoid valve by fishbowl innovations

water sprinkler valve from home depot

Controller for valves
shown above.

controller by home depot

RO pure water is
stored in these 2 tanks.

The controllers above
keep them full
but not overflowing

Auto top-up tank

70 gallon water storage tank

Tunze water level controller,
runs top-up pump.

When the water level drops in the sump from
evaporation, this controller activates a pump
that pumps water from the auto top-up tank
into the sump.

TDS monitor

Checks "total dissolved solids" in the pure water created by my RO / DI system. Hopefully it always will read 0.

From the sump, these small systems below, get- and return- water:
Activated carbon, ferric oxide, UV sterlizer,
Chiller, Protein skimmer, Calcium reactor.

water flow rate coming through the carbon and ferric oxide canisters (below)

I used to use the PhoBan reactor, but then
I replaced it with 2 separate canisters, one for carbon, one for ferric oxide.

And then I got two more canisters, so 3
run carbon, one GFO.
(compare to the
original Phosban.)

UV Sterlizer

( kills bacteria with
ultraviolet light )

model: Aqua Ultraviolet classic 114 watt

Chiller

( in summer, water gets
too hot. )

Protein Skimmer

( makes bubbles to trap
greenish sludge )

Calcium reactor

Skimmer is an ASM G4 model.

The calcium reactor runs pH 6.9 water through Aragonite chips,
to dissolve calcium and drip it into the sump. Corals need calcium.

CO2 cylinder

Pinpoint pH controller

bubbles CO2 to acidify water

2 Finnex heaters in sump

( maintain 80 degrees
Fahrenheit water temp
26.7 C )

2 main
Barracuda pumps,
spun by 2
Baldor motors.

Baldor motor

Pinpoint probes

Salinity, pH, Nitrates,
Oxygen reactivity, Calcium

Refractometer
( for Salinity )

Powder foods
for corals, clams
& copepods

Reef bugs

Reef-roids

Bottles of stuff

Reef Crystals
Salt mix

More stuff

Above the aquarium are these lights.

3 metal halide lights

Hamilton Technologies

3 metal halide
power supplies

Light bulbs are
400W, 20,000 K

double-end

Moonlight controller and bulb
( FishbowlInnovations.com )

Lettuce hanger on forceps

Hydor Koralia
Wavemaker, with #4
powerheads, 4 total,
in the bottom corners.

Inflowing water at
each end of tank.

Magnetic glass scraper

( Magnavore.com )

OH look. I changed 500 gallons of
water, (using Reef Crystals) in
October 2009.

Then in 10 days in November,
using Instant Ocean salt, my
red slime cyanobacteria disappeared.

Frozen fish food
Spirulina Brine Shrimp
and Mysis Shrimp

More types

Strainer for fish food

The other stuff is "silverfish",
from Chinese grocery,
given to Anemone.

Why I strain my frozen food.
Because the residual cloudy
colored water would give nutrition to cyanobacteria.

Movie of feeding time.

They’re not too excited about
their mysis shrimp.

Feeding lasts 3 minutes.

Feeding movie. 3 mins .avi The file is 152 MB, which takes quite a long time to download. I you want to see the video in Windows Media Player, you have to have patience.

other notes:none.
