Aquarium fish pictures page of the dead

February 28, 2015 By Dr. Halls

These are pictures of fish and corals that have died.

Achilles Tang

Sadly, he died in early March ’09, after eating the dead body of another fish.

Lion Goby

The Lion goby died unexpectedly in Jan 2009. He was a very fun fish.
I tried replacing him with a Sleeper Goby in early March,
but that Goby didn’t survive the new environment, dying in 1 day.

Carpenter’s Fairy Wrasse

Sadly, he died April 4, 2009. He was the smallest of the wrasses and probably was too scared to get a full feeding, so I think he gradually starved.

Pulsing xenia

On Feb 21, 2009, 3/4 of it has died. In March 28, 2009, that remaining 1/4 has managed to survive, but still is borderline health.

On April 4, 2009, during the night, something ate the bigger remaining stalks. Just a tiny amount remains.

All gone on May 3, 2009.

Zoanthids colony

palythoa sp.

pink or purple

Some polyps in the middle have been sick for a few days, Feb 21, 2009
Sadly, by March 28, 2009, only 1/3 of that colony remains.
The rest died and were picked off by fish. April 26, 2009: 95% gone. Early May, all gone.

Bubble coral.

before I moved him, when he was in too much water currents, the balloons wouldn’t inflate.

Then, I moved him, and he started looking great.

Same Bubble coral.

plerogyra Sinuosa. At night, (2nd image) the balloons deflate and a different kind of pointy polyp becomes active.

Same bubble coral.

Unfortunately, by late March 2009, this coral was nearly dead. It was around this time, that I discovered that my aquarium had been running with low salinity. (S.G. 1.018) due to incorrectly calibrated refractometer. I hope it will survive, after fixing the salinity problem, to a true S.G. of 1.026.

April 23, 2009 update: doing a little better.

April 26, 2009. My Sally lightfoot crab at the remnants of it. It’s dead now.

Actually, a few small bits have stayed alive.

Aiptasia

a different few corals with light green tips

Small feather dusters

These feather dusters gradually disappeared.

anthelia or clauveria species

disappeared after rock movements to catch Leopard Crab, fall 2009.

Dragon goby

He’s slowing starving to death. 4 pictures of same fish. In mid-March 2009, he died.

2nd picture shows it curled up temporarily into a ball. Super cool.

Algae

Extra snails were added, and this gradually went away.

A lawnmower blenny sitting on a big snail

he he. This smaller blenny tries to hide from the other bigger lawnmower blenny.

April 26, 2009. Haven’t seen this 2nd blenny for a few days. I think he got killed by the bigger one.

Diatoms

Yes, I’m having trouble with diatoms on my sand. April 4, 2009. Problem disappeared gradually and was gone by May 9, 2009.

Scotts Wrasse

for some reason, he’s hard to get a sharp photo. This photo from April 3, 2009 shows the wrasse up high near the water-surface.

By April 9, he’s having swim-bladder trouble and is sinking to the bottom and ending up in a vertical orientation. I hope he survives.
By April 17, he’s been upside down in a net for past 5 days. His swim bladder is empty and gas in his belly always flips him over. He hates that. He’s tiring out and slowly dying.
By April 23, still upside down, very stiff, hardly eating anything. Died May1, 2009.

Cyanobacteria growth

spreading on rocks, making little gas bubbles. First noticed it on April 23, 2009. Not there 2 days ago.

Bicolor Blenny

added late March 2009

By late april, 09, his yellow tail had faded to black. He was all black. He bites the big clab, causing it to retract its flesh a lot. He bites all corals, and had to be removed from the tank. gone in Mid-May.

Big Bristleworm

(flushed it.)

Flasher Wrasse

He was one of my first fish, in fall 2008.

update May 17, 2009. He was sick for a few weeks, having slight whitish opacity sticking onto his body, and slightly cloudy covering over his eyes. Then that mostly resolved, but now the fish is hanging out at the top of the tank, so it might have developed a swim-bladder problem.

He disappeared on May 20, 2009.

an orange Plate Coral, Fungia spp.

This poor little coral became an object that a crab used to wedge into crevaces. 3 times I found this coral moved into dark crags. Its edges have been damaged from those moves (and subsequent retreivals), but it’s doing OK, and recovered its orange color. But in May 17, 2009 its edges are dark and it has white bleached streaks. By May 25 it was totally white.

Berghia Nudibranch

Saw him one evening in Feburary 2009. Never seen again.

new Coral 6

Everything liked how this one tasted, fish and crabs and snails. Eventually all the green areas got eaten entirely.

Blue Sponge

My leopard crab, broke it apart, and hauled the pieces under a ledge to create a hiding place for itself.

Zoanthids polyps

palythoa sp.

growing bigger colony in May 2009.

But later, the Bellus Angel ate them all, slowly, bit by bit, day after day.

Turbo Snail

nice black & white colors. Got 2 in May 16, 2009. They starved I think, and eventually were eaten by hermit crabs, August 2009.

Yasha Haze Goby

Haven’t seen him since early August 2009.
Maybe Sally lightfoot crab got him.

Fire Cleaner shrimp

I bought two of these. The wrasses sneak up on them, bite their tails. Then other fish share the remains. Lasted 1 day.

Leopard Crab

He had been hiding unseen in my tank for 6 months before I caught my first sighting of him.
This crab moves shells around the tank, and builds them into walls for a his private fort inside the rocks. He got bigger, and moved corals and rocks too much, and I had to get rid of him. I gave him to the aquarium store, Oct 2009.

Rainford Goby

Added Oct 4, 2009. Also the nice Orange sponge. The Rainford Goby died Nov 7, 2009. Probably starved.

Shrimp goby

Added in early 2009. There were 2, but one died. The other hides, and is seen only every 3 weeks. The other died Nov 9, 2009.

Cyanobacteria

Cyanobacteria

Cured of this stuff in late Nov 2009. Hurray!

Big Maxima Clam 2

died Nov 7, 2009. was being picked on by lawnmower blenny, and stayed retracted a lot.. probably not enough light.

Mixed clump of corals

My bellus angel gradually ate all they zoanthids, then the other things gradually died too.

Red Head goby

added May 16,2009. Rarely seen, every 2 months or so. Was last seen Sept 29, 2009. Hides in a hole. By Nov 20009, declared MIA.

Globe Urchin
(Mespilia globulus)

(Tuxedo Pincushion Urchin)

Died Dec 21, 2009. gradually starved.

other notes:none.

Feel free to help me identify the proper names of these creatures.
