They have long portrayed weight management as an understandable sum of calories in vs. calories out. Eat more calories than you burn, and you’ll put on weight. Burn more calories than you consume, and you’ll drop a lot of weight. The magic total of calories contended about for decades has been 3500 – deduct that number from your diet or burn off 3500 calories more than what you absorb and you’ll shed 1 lb.

“Myth or Fact?”

This criterion is a mistaken predictor of weight change and should no longer be used. The 3500-kcal/lb rule believes that body weight changes linearly over a long period of time, which is not the main concern.
