Opening of the Mouth Ceremony in Ancient Egypt Symbolism
Opening of the Mouth, is reportedly a ceremony from ancient Egypt, and it wouldn't surprise me that it is actually written about in hieroglyphics on funerary papyri. Nonetheless, the pictograms using an Adze tool near a nose, look non-literal to me.
Image A not only has an adze near a nose, the lower hand has one hovering over the brim of a bowl, where it's shape resembles the snakes that do a loop back into the brim of a container.
Image B has interchanged a snake stick instead of an adze. The ladies are making a loop-back arm gesture to the top of their heads. Image E shows a snake stick curving slightly down to the top of a head. Someone made image F, seemingly showing us that snake stick and adze are related.
Image C has a close-up on image D. An ankh with a hawk-head is sending energy downward. a different symbol with a feather on top, also seems to be sending energy downward. Both beard and hair cloth covers are an upward flow path into the head, symbolically.
Image G has two barriers shown, and the lower part has an Adze hovering over a portal symbol. I'm not showing the "shovel" symbol (seen on sema-tawy), but it's blade is to make a penetration into the ground, ie, make a portal, and I think the Adze has a similar meaning, to cut a barrier to make a portal.
Image I has a close-up on image J. This is the horizontal flow region above a tabletop. Because of the Adze's equivalence to a snake stick, I think the adze brings flow into the center, from the right side.
Image K shows pointed flower bulbs, direction flow toward the nose. Image M has the type of flower with cone-shape petals, also directing flow toward the nose. Image L is opposite, the ankh in that orientation means flow from the nose to the arm and elbow over the core. Nose and mouth are horizontal plane portals of a head-torus.
I don't think any mouth needed to be literally opened. But the symbolism could mean establishing a portal for putting energy into the head-torus via it's horizontal plane, and maybe that was considered beneficial to the deceased soul.
